Colorado House bill to increase gun theft penalties passes committee, moving to Appropriations Committee
A bill increasing penalties for gun theft narrowly cleared its first hurdle on Tuesday, passing through the House Judiciary Committee by one vote.House Bill 1062, sponsored by Majority Leader Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge, and Rep. Ryan Armagost, R-Berthoud, would exempt firearms from the state's sentencing structure for theft, making it a Class 6 felony, regardless of the firearm's value.The bill passed on a 6-5 vote and will move on to the Appropriations Committee, as it carries a fiscal note of nearly $400,000 for the 2025-2026 fiscal year and nearly $1 million for 2026-2027.The state imposed a similar sentencing structure for car theft in 2023 — the state has since seen a decrease in stolen vehicles, though it is not completely clear whether that was entirely due to the penalty increase.Colorado Politics0Add a comment

Madison Police Department officers arrested Jerid S. Hinz, 33, after a shooting over the weekend on the city’s south side.MPD stated the report of a person with a gunshot wound came in around 5 a.m. Saturday on Dutch Mill Road.Officials took the victim to a hospital for his injuries. The victim explained that the shooting happened about 20 minutes earlier on Sunnyvale Lane.Police reported finding 33-year-old suspect Jerid S. Hinz, 33, at a hotel on Junction Court.Hinz faces charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of methamphetamine.
